“Jail Not Enough — Shoot Her” say Sudanese Protesters

This is freaking ridiculous. (editorial comment)

Gillian Gibbons, whose recent sentence to 15 days in prison for allowing her students to name a class teddy bear Mohammad in her Sudan classroom, is NOW being threatened by “thousands” of Sudanese Muslims. They want her to die. FOR A $#!%! TEDDY BEAR.

Read about it here (click.)

I never want to hear ANYBODY gripe about American Christian activists EVER FREAKING AGAIN. You have NO idea how bad REAL religious extremist fanaticism can get. And you’d probably be the first ones up against the wall if the Religion Of Peace ™ had their way over here.

EDIT:  She’s been pardoned and sent home, where she will be safe and sound… just like Salman Rushdie.

“Religion of Peace?” — Teacher to be flogged in Sudan…

British national Gillian Gibbons, 54, faces 40 lashes, six months of imprisonment, or monetary punishment. Why?

Because of a teddy bear.

… not sure what else I could say here. If I ever get a puppy, though, I’m pretty sure what I’ll name him…

UPDATE:  Ms. Gibbons has been sentenced to 15 days in prison.  No flogging (now that the eyes of the world are on the Sudanese government.)  No word as to whether she will be allowed access to HUNNY POTS to alleviate “rumblies in her tumbly” during the time to be served.

Absolutely ridiculous.  Stupid Sudan.

Turns out that simply standing up may be an important factor in weight loss.

Read this article for some more details.

If you’ll excuse me, I need to get off my fat arse now…

‘Tis the season… for strange music (UPDATED)

I thought I’d share one of my favorite seasonal resources with my many (LOL) readers: The X-Entertainment Christmas Jukebox.

If you’re familiar with the X-Entertainment website (warning: NOT porn,) then you know what to expect. Matt (whose name I can’t seem to recall,) a twenty-something writer from New York state, has spent nearly a decade (I think) writing capsule reviews about toys, TV shows, and life experiences from his childhood (still in progress.)

His streaming Christmas jukebox (linked below) contains a collection of holiday favorites from radio and TV of yesteryear, as well as some more obscure tunes (Dominick the Christmas Donkey or Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis are a couple which spring to mind.) Not all of them are child-friendly, but you are guaranteed to smile and groan as the  Christmas memories come crashing through your brain.

NEW: They play in their own window (not sure what the plugin is… probably flash.)

Enjoy.  2006 Jukebox

“environmentally friendly” architecture apparently NOT “for the birds”

People (or sometimes “students”) often ask me about what I think the best ways to “save the planet” might be.  I respond to their (misguided) inquiries with this shocking (Z0MG!!!!1!) double-whammy of a question:

What makes you think that our planet NEEDS saving? And what makes you think WE could do anything about it if it did?

This often draws disgust, ire, and/or confusion (again, students).  Please allow me to briefly elaborate:

a.  Our recorded knowledge of global climate extends back only the last hundred or so years, and the methods used in recording data are varied and often inaccurate.  (Read State of Fear by Michael Crichton for more info.)

b.  Mankind is a natural part of the biosphere, and has been for the entire existence of our species.

c.  The idea that we, who are such a small, utterly insignificant, speck on our planet (in terms of total mass, time of total existence, etc.) could through our actions “destroy the earth” is the absolute height of human arrogance, and simply illustrates how little we really understand about our universe.

Take THIS STORY, for example (click).

For all our good intentions, we are still just poking about in the dark with a stick when it comes to “eco-friendliness.”  The overwhelming fact that politics and media distortion take a front seat in the debate only slows the march of science and true understanding.

So before you beat yourself black, blue and GREEN, stop and think about what you actually know and don’t know.  Do it for the birds.

It’s not just your imagination, teachers: your students want to kill you…

dun, dun da-dunnn...

You never can tell when a budding psychopath is going to try to take you out.

This is why I keep my $%!#$ door locked when I’m not in my room. That, and somebody stole my GameBoy last year… Still trying to get over that one.

Embryonic stem cells… without creating or destroying embryos? HECK YES.

This is a fascinating article from The Telegraph about Professor Ian Wilmut’s recent announcement that he is abandoning the Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) technique for creating cloned embryos, which he pioneered over a decade ago. Wilmut, professor at the University of Edinburgh and creator of Dolly the sheep, is instead focusing on a new technique known as “de-differentiation,” currently being researched by Professor Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University. Yamanaka’s technique would result in pluripotent ESCs without the use of human eggs, and without the creation or subsequent destruction of ANY human embryos.

Here’s the article. (clicky)

Folks, this seems like (at least the beginning of) a win-win situation for the future of therapeutic cloning and genetic medicine. The fact that a “giant” like Professor Wilmut has jumped on-board with such energy and certainty, INSTEAD of pursuing the avenue accorded him by his government-issued permit to create human embryos, should speak volumes about the seriousness of de-differentiation’s potential.

This excites me to no end. :)

Canadian RCMPs Taser Man to Death at Vancouver Airport

I will never complain about another American cop again after seeing this. Thank God for due process.

WARNING: Shocking video footage of the tasering and death of Robert Dziekanski.

I know that one video clip isn’t much to go by, but can anyone else see reasonable cause for what the police did to this poor guy? What, he was angry and Polish? Come on!

CLICK HERE for more information on the situation, and its possible international blowback.

The random musings of a 30-something, West Texas high-school science teacher. Hoo-RAY.
